1906 Earthquake Photos Subject of Exhibit
at Calaveras
Museum

A rare look at the 1906 San Francisco earthquake as seen through the lens of
a young female photographer will be the focus of an exhibit coming to the
Calaveras County Museum April 29 to May 27. Coinciding with the 100th
anniversary of the tragic quake, the display of historic photos are a part
of the Edith Irvine Collection belonging to Brigham Young University.
Irvine, a resident of Mokelumne Hill (in Calaveras County), was only 22 when
she was in San Francisco and photographed the destruction on 8x10glass plate
negatives. Other photos by Irvine to be included in the exhibit are of her
hometown of Mokelumne Hill from 1906 to 1915, and of construction of the
Electra Powerhouse on the Mokelumne River between 1898 and 1902 .
The month of May is California Museum Month. What better time to visit the
Calaveras County Museum. The public is invited to view the Edith Irvine
exhibit on the second level in the historic courtroom of the Museum. An
elevator is available. Open daily 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Museum is located
at 30 Main Street in San Andreas. An Opening Reception is scheduled for
Saturday, April 29, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. The Edith Irvine exhibit is a
collaborative project of the Calaveras County Historical Society, Arts
Council, Library, and the Mokelumne Hill History Society. For more
