Annual Artists Scholarships

Grants Awarded

We are pleased to announce our 2011 Artist Scholarships to three local high school students.  These students scored high in seven categories ranging from verbal quality, passion for the arts, skills, seriousness, thoughtfulness, potential in succeeding in their chosen goal, and confidence. 

Our scholarship winners are:

Calaveras High School

Katie Tanner is awarded $750 from the Elaine Bryan Memorial Scholarship (aka: Arts of Bear Valley); Shayla Laymen is awarded $750 from the Robert Atkinson Visual Artist Scholarship.

Bret Harte High School

Nikko Reyes is awarded $750 from the Robert Atkinson Visual Artist Scholarship.

Remember to apply next year for the 2012 scholarships - the Elaine Bryan Memorial Scholarship is open to any Calaveras resident pursuing training in the arts and the Robert Atkinson Visual Artist Scholarships is open to local high school students only.

Art Center in San Andreas

This new art center located on Highway 49 just west of Main Street in
San Andreas, will kick off with a grand opening on Sunday, June 20th from 1-4 pm. Created by psychologist, Sharon Armstrong, aka artist Sharon Strong, along with a host of volunteers. With 503(c)(3) non-profit status in the works, summer classes will be offered in Beginning Guitar and Songwriting with Jeanine Rutherford, Creative Drawing with Nanette Klass, Mask Making with Sharon Strong, Oil Painting with George Allen Durkee and Bird House Painting with Deanna Furtney.  Everyone is welcome.

Suggested donation per class is $10. A free drop-in studio

for all ages will begin in the fall.

June 15: deadline to enter Annual Calaveras Artists Studio Tour which is the last weekend of September. Call (209) 754-1774.

Second week of November: Receiving art for the Gallery Calaveras annual Affordable Gifts of Art Show and Sale, which runs from mid- Nov. through December, 22 Main Street, San Andreas. Call (209) 754-1774.

The Calaveras County Arts Council is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation.  Founded in 1981, our purpose is to coordinate excellence in the presenting and promotion of the visual and performing arts of all cultures for artists, residents and visitors.  Our staff is comprised of two co-executive directors and a part-time assistant under the direction of an 11-member volunteer Board of Directors.
