Call To Artists2024 Congressional Art Competition for High School Students
Each year members of the U.S. House of Representatives conduct the Congressional Art Competition for High School Students, and this year Congressman Tom McClintock extended the invitation to high school students from Calaveras County. For this year's competition they sought works reflecting pride in our country, America’s symbols, icons, traditions and so forth. The selected piece is an oil painting called Braiding Hair by Meredith Grotto. There are decades of life to consider behind the detailed hands weaving the long, light hair. In many Indigenous communities the three strands of a braid represent 'mind', 'body', and 'spirit', and seeing as indigenous people's are the rightful owners of the land that was stolen from them as other people "discovered" it, we found Grotto's piece to be well suited for this year's Congressional Art Competition. Meredith Grotto has received Honorable Mention and her work will be shown at Congressman McClintock's Reception on May 3, at his Eldorado Hills office! Congratulations Meredith! |

Summer of 2024 Despite the heat, we were able to provide a fun, welcoming environment for patrons to enjoy live music in our beautiful parks throughout Calaveras County!
Thank you to all of our supportive patrons, without you we wouldn't be able to sustain such a lively series. We look forward to the many years to come! Ovations is on its way!
We are in the process of organizing this year's Ovations Series! Keep your eyes peeled for our winter performing arts line up! Calaveras County was represented by the talented Rebecca Hungerford at the 19th Annual California Poetry Out Loud State Finals!
California is home to the largest Poetry Out Loud competition in the country. This year's program involved 18,849 students and 490 teachers from 221 schools across California. Rebecca confidently took the stage alongside 50 other county champions to prove the lasting power of the written word. Rebecca was one of the best that the state had to offer at this year's competition, and we are so proud of the work she put in. She recited, To Autumn by John Keats, Miss You. Would like to grab that chilled tofu we love. by Gabrielle Calvocoressi, and What the Oracle Said by Shara McCallum. Rebecca stated "The arts help me to express myself and provide an outlet for people to tell their own stories." and we could not agree more. Thank you for sharing your talents in representing Calaveras County, Rebecca. Poetry Out Loud is sponsored by the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Ride & Walk 4 ArtWe cannot thank you enough!!!! This year's Ride & Walk 4 Art event was spectacular! The sun was shining and everyone was feeling great! The participants enjoyed a monitored, safe ride and walk through our beautiful Calaveras County. We had an amazing turn out, with 140 cyclists on from all over Northern California and 40 walkers. Thank you for the wonderful participation! This annual event supports Calaveras Arts Council's mission to provide art education to children of Calaveras County. Participants contributions help kids make sense of their lives as they learn critical real world skills like creative thinking, resilience, problem solving, and project management. Studies show that children with access to the arts fare better in school and life. Contributions help pay for many things: art supplies for classes, visiting artists, school theater projects, art days at elementary schools, etc. This year and the coming year, the need is even greater as school budgets have been slashed. Because of this need, we hold this fundraiser and put every dime toward exposing kids to theatre, painting, drawing, literature and poetry. Thank you for helping us keep the arts in our public schools. For information on Ride & Walk 4 Art 2025, contact Rob Williams at [email protected] or visit www.rideandwalk4art.com/.
