Calaveras County Arts Council
Racial Equity Statement
The mission of the Calaveras County Arts Council (CCAC) is to build a united community by awakening, supporting and nourishing the arts.
Purpose: The CCAC believes that each and every voice matters. We explicitly invite all voices to speak and be heard within the framework of mutual respect. By developing an ever-widening network of artists, citizens, patrons and sponsors, we work towards the mission of uniting the community through the arts. We firmly believe that the arts can serve as a conduit to bring people together across cultural, ethnic, and racial divides to create a stronger, healthier, and more just community.
The CCAC is committed to supporting a diversity of art activities which not only reflect the goals of the community but enlighten, embolden and expand those goals.
Acknowledgement: We acknowledge that the history of Calaveras County has included cultural biases and historic and institutional racism, and that our present racial inequities are a direct outgrowth of racist policies and practices embedded in our past.
We did not choose this history, but we can choose our actions in the present. Calaveras is predominantly white, but roughly 20% of our population identifies as Hispanic/Latino or belongs to other BIPOC communities. We acknowledge that to be a healthy, equitable community, our cultural conversation needs to include their voices.
We believe that inclusive and open access to the arts can shape the future into more equitable possibilities by changing hearts and minds and bringing the community together.
Commitment: The CCAC is committed to a policy of inclusivity. We affirm that the CCAC is a diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization where all employees and volunteers, artists and patrons, whatever their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation or identity, education or disability, feel valued and respected.
The CCAC is committed to a practice of explicit invitation to all voices to speak and be heard, with special outreach to marginalized, hidden, and underserved communities and people of color.
We commit our effort and resources to:
We believe that the arts are big enough for all, and that the community thrives when all are included. We seek to develop an ever-widening network of artists, citizens, patrons and sponsors; foster an atmosphere of respectful inclusivity; and create a safe space within the Arts Council for growth.
We work towards our mission of uniting the community through the arts.

We commit our effort and resources to:
- Design and implement programs, policies and practices that are inclusive of all, and actively work to include members of the BIPOC and LGBTQ community, and other marginalized populations to our programs.
- Reach out to and collaborate with BIPOC, LGBTQ, and other underrepresented communities to learn how best to serve them within our organization, and invite them into the arts community of Calaveras County
- Promote community voice, trust and dignity; and to engage all communities in a manner that fosters trust among people across geographic, race, class and gender lines and supports communities’ (and individuals’) efforts to create community art.
- Continue to work towards building racial equity with the understanding that this framework is dynamic and will change as we continue to learn and grow in our understanding of and approach to equitable and inclusive practices.
