Anne Cook, bricoleur*
*a French word, a bricoleur (pronounced bree-kooh-loor) is someone with the ability
to transform diverse objects into something new, often working with what is at hand.
Showing at Mok. Hill Miscellany • 8359 Center St. (at the corner of
Main and Center in Mokelumne Hil and across from Shutter Tree Park.)
A bricoleur reconsiders, reimagines and repurposes objects by giving them a second look. I am also a scavenger and collector since childhood. I recall making dollhouse furniture from discarded Dixie cups as an early indication of my bricoleur tendencies. My collections include vintage paper, rusted metal, discarded furniture, pottery shards, beach glass, bones, feathers, beads, buttons, lace, old bottles and the list goes on. The shadowboxes I create reflect that child in me continuing to collect and make up new worlds with what I have at hand. My Tossed & Found – shadowbox assemblages are featured in Mok. Hill Miscellany. I will be set up there (along with Deborah Marlene) for this years Calaveras County Arts Council open studio tour.
I retired from the commercial art world in 2015 where I was a graphic designer and an internationally recognized award winning illustrator for 30 years. My present day creative pursuits include shadowbox assemblage, repurposed vintage jewelry, watercolors and mosaic art. Currently I am in the middle of a big project as creative director and chief mosaicist for the Shutter Tree Park mural project on the north wall of the library in Mokelumne Hill. This 49 X 20 foot wall is a bit more than half way done with a couple more years of work to go. It is right across the street from where I will be showing for open studio so be sure to check it out while you are visiting!
Artfully yours,
Anne Cook
