Artist statement
I am fascinated by people. They are mysteries to me, slightly frightening, overwhelmingly powerful, and often indecipherable. They are endlessy fascinating.
I look for moments when the public mask—the face that hides our true selves—falls away, and the private person peeks out. That is the person I am most interested in meeting.
The ability of watercolor to be both transparent and opaque makes it a perfect medium and metaphor for painting portraits. While the materials needed are simple—a couple of brushes, pigment, paper, and water—the medium is complex and unpredictable. Water, pigment, and paper have their own dialogue, and mindfulness is needed for the painter to hear it.
I am also a lover of the intersection of the fantastical and the natural world. I'm an inveterate story teller, seeking to weave a story that includes character and the constellation of nature that surrounds us.
Artist Bio
A Theatre Arts major from Humboldt State University, I have designed stage makeup, made masks, written stories, taught drawing to children in Mexico, made magazines, and painted portraits. I have studied painting with Steve Curl and Felicia Forte, and life drawing with Rob Anderson. I live in Santa Clara Valley and when I am not painting, I am learning Yiddish with Jon Levitow and playing Irish flute.
