Moana Bailey Hendrix
Although born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, I have spent more than half my life here in the Sierra Foothills of Calaveras County. I have found it to be a land of beauty that moves at its own pace and offers time for reflection in the splendor of nature.
Studying black and white film photography in college gave me a love of light and shadow, form and composition. Years of enjoying darkroom work, trying to get my images just right, initially made me somewhat resistant to digital photography. However, with the advent of digital editing, in time I discovered whole new worlds of color and possibility.
In recent years the greatest impact on my art came from a workshop by artist Vlatka Varga called 'Healing Through the Expressive Arts" In her classes I learned not only to explore my feelings but to let them be organically expressed in my paintings.
My current work blends the realism of photography with the ethereal moodiness of my abstract paintings. Along with a little digital magic, my hope is to create images that promote a sense of relaxation, wonder and healing. With feet grounded in reality, my work invites you to reverence the beauty of nature that is all around us while allowing your imagination to lead you on a journey to magical possibility.
